Louisiana Chicken Festival ____________________________
In May 1989, a group of Dubach citizens met and formed a civic group named Dubach Restoration and Beautification Organization, Inc. (DRABO). The purpose of the Group was to restore pride in the community and help revitalize the downtown area. At the first meeting it was decided that we needed a festival to help promote the area and to serve as a means of fund raising for projects.
The poultry industry was growing tremendously in the area at that time. There were 414 producers in a five parish area of North Louisiana with an additional 200 broiler houses planned for 1995. The poultry industry, including hatcheries, processing plants, egg farms, breeder houses, feed mills, etc. generate a tremendous income into the economy of the state each year. DRABO members considered the economic impact of the industry and decided that a Chicken Festival was the natural choice for us. In 1995, the Legislature of Louisiana designated the Dubach Chicken Festival as "The Official Chicken Festival for the State of Louisiana". Each year our goal is to produce a festival worthy of being the official festival of the State.
The Louisiana Chicken Festival is held the fourth Friday and Saturday in September each year. Although Friday and Saturday are the main festival days, some events are held prior to the fourth weekend including the Beauty Pageant.
Each year the members of DRABO prepare and serve The Growers Dinner honoring owners of broiler houses in this area. The owners, their families, area hatchery and processing plant officials, Commissioner of Agriculture, our State Representative and Senators, local Mayors, and others are invited.
The Chicken Festival features live entertainment on Friday night. Art and craft and food booths are set up on Friday. Carnival rides and games are available for all ages to enjoy. Bingo games with great prizes are also held on Friday night.
The fourth Saturday of September is the main festival day. Featured are Chicken Cooking Contests, Quilt Raffle, The Strut, Cackle, and Crow Contests, Cake Walk, 5-K Run, Drumstick Eating Contest, Children's Activities, and live entertainment all day.
Recent additions include a Quilt Show held in the historic Scott Hamilton Warehouse and a Poker Run which is great fun for motorcycle riders. All profits made by DRABO are used in projects that benefit the entire town of Dubach.
